Who We Are

About Foundation Functional

Foundation Functional is a functional medicine provider serving Johnson City, TN, built on the belief that lasting wellness begins by understanding the whole person—not just isolated symptoms. As a holistic, integrative health clinic, our team uses advanced functional medicine testing and personalized care to uncover root causes of fatigue, hormone imbalance, inflammation, and chronic health concerns.

We take time to look deeper, connecting the dots between biology, lifestyle, and environment—areas often overlooked in conventional care. This thoughtful, evidence-based approach allows us to design care plans that support true healing, not temporary symptom relief.

Through secure telehealth visits, we make expert functional medicine care accessible and convenient. From comprehensive lab analysis to one-on-one nutrition and lifestyle guidance, we partner with you to create personalized plans that restore balance, energy, and long-term health. Whether you’re seeking improved digestion, balanced hormones, renewed vitality, or preventive care, our team is here to support your journey—every step of the way.

ABBY DE GOUVEIA

Abby de Gouveia is a functional medicine practitioner serving Johnson City and East Tennessee, with a passion for helping individuals improve their health through safe, personalized, and medically guided care. Raised in East Tennessee, Abby returned home after several years in the Pacific Northwest and is grateful to now serve the community where she grew up.

She earned her undergraduate degree from East Tennessee State University and completed her master’s degree at Lincoln Memorial University–DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. Her clinical background includes experience in urgent and emergent care, with a strong focus on supporting patients through sustainable weight loss and metabolic health improvement.

Abby believes the most meaningful care happens when providers take time to understand the full picture of a patient’s health. She is especially passionate about helping individuals reach their health and weight goals in a way that is safe, evidence-based, and medically supervised, while addressing the underlying factors that contribute to imbalance.

Outside of patient care, Abby enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters. She loves hiking, traveling, playing board games, and making memories with family. Music is also an important part of her life, and she enjoys singing and playing the violin as ways to recharge.

As your practitioner, Abby is committed to helping you uncover the root causes of your health concerns and guiding you with a customized care plan designed to support lasting wellness.

As your personal practitioner, I want to help you find the real reason behind your health problems so you can get as healthy as possible with a customized plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is functional medicine?
Functional medicine is a personalized, evidence-based, systems-based approach to healthcare that looks for the root causes of symptoms. Instead of treating issues in isolation, we evaluate how hormones, gut health, inflammation, metabolism, stress, and lifestyle all work together — and create a plan that supports whole-body healing.

How do telehealth visits work?
All consultations are done securely online. After scheduling, you’ll receive a video link and simple instructions. Your provider will review your history, symptoms, and goals, recommend any necessary lab tests, and walk through your personalized plan — all from the comfort of your home.

Do I need to live in Johnson City to become a patient?
No — telehealth allows us to serve patients throughout Tennessee. As long as you are located within the state our providers are licensed in, you can receive care virtually.

What types of conditions do you help with?
We commonly work with hormone imbalance, thyroid dysfunction, gut issues, chronic fatigue, inflammation, autoimmune concerns, metabolic issues, weight challenges, and stress-related symptoms. If you’re unsure whether we treat your condition, we’re happy to discuss it during a consultation.

Do you order lab tests?
Yes. We offer both standard labs and advanced functional medicine testing. Many tests can be completed at local labs, pharmacies, or through at-home kits delivered to your door.

Will you work with my primary care doctor?
Yes. We encourage collaboration and can share lab results or care plans with your primary care provider to ensure you receive coordinated, comprehensive wellness support.

Do you accept insurance?
At this time, we do not accept insurance. However, many services and lab tests may qualify for HSA or FSA use. We can provide detailed receipts upon request for potential reimbursement.

How long does it take to see results?
Each person’s journey is unique, but many patients begin experiencing improvements in energy, digestion, sleep, or mood within the first 4–8 weeks. More complex concerns may require a longer, step-by-step approach.

What’s included in a personalized care plan?

Your plan may include nutrition guidance, supplement recommendations, lifestyle strategies, stress support, hormone or metabolic optimization, and follow-up visits — all tailored to your symptoms, labs, and goals.
